The story

Göttfried in Linz: Award-Winning International Cooking in a Historic Setting

The kitchen and its guiding hands

At Göttfried in Linz, international cooking intersects with regional Austrian traditions through the steady hand of chef Christian Göttfried and sous chef Markus Auinger. They steer a menu balancing traditional pub fare with deliberate Mediterranean and Asian influences, a balance Gault&Millau recognized with a score of fifteen. Ingredients arrive from local farms and coastal fisheries, moving quickly through a kitchen that treats sustainability as a daily practice. The result is a focused approach to regional gastronomy where technique supports the natural flavor of each ingredient.

Plates built for sharing or solitary focus

The menu highlights include two preparations of organic beef, seared to a precise rose hue and presented alongside a delicate praline texture. Risotto-style potatoes cut with fresh lovage pair naturally with Atlantic cod arriving in a deeply aromatic fennel broth. A dry-aged beef roast offers a darker profile, while the house Wiener Schnitzel anchors the main courses with young calf meat and vogerl salad. Every plate reflects a disciplined approach to Austrian and continental cuisine.

The dining space and evening rhythm

Guests choose between a vaulted interior room that retains its historic character or a spacious courtyard garden designed to pause the summer heat. The atmosphere stays grounded and unhurried, reflecting the owners’ commitment to genuine hospitality over theatrical presentation. A wine list spanning more than three hundred labels complements the food without overwhelming the table, allowing regional producers to take center stage. Service extends into the evening, leaving room for quiet conversation after the last course.

Christian and Simone Göttfried run one of the city's finest restaurants right in the heart of Linz's old town, offering a cozy atmosphere whether you dine in the well-preserved lounge with its historic vaulted ceiling or on the courtyard terrace. For years, Christian Göttfried has proven that he not only masters traditional tavern classics at the highest level, but also constantly innovates, drawing inspiration from Mediterranean and Asian cuisines to create new dishes. Absolutely brilliant: two preparations of organic beef, cooked to a perfect pink and served as a praline, accompanied by risotto-style sliced potatoes generously seasoned with lovage. The skrei cod arrives in a wonderfully aromatic fennel broth. And even if you are looking for a classic Wiener Schnitzel, you might just find the best in the city here: made from organic veal and served with a potato and watercress salad.
