The story
At Essenz in Antwerp, chef Joris Hoefkens draws on experience gained at some of Belgium’s most acclaimed kitchens – Nuance (two Michelin stars), Hof Van Cleve (three stars), Hofke van Bazel (one star), Volta, and Verso Café. His cooking is rooted in the Belgian-French tradition, focusing on fresh meat, fish, and vegetarian dishes.
Essenz offers a four- or five-course menu for both lunch and dinner, with à la carte options also available. The Modern French cuisine is prepared with careful attention to ingredients, though the kitchen cannot accommodate gluten-free, vegan, lactose-free, soy-free, or egg-free diets due to the nature of its base preparations.
The restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026, reflecting the consistent quality of its cooking and service. The recognition underscores Hoefkens’ ability to translate his fine-dining background into a more accessible but still refined setting.
For groups of 14 to 18 guests, Essenz offers a private dining experience. The restaurant also features outdoor seating, making it a versatile choice for special occasions. Reservations and further details are available by contacting the restaurant directly.
