The story
Mario Restaurant & Traiteur anchors the Antwerp neighbourhood of Kammenstraat with an Italian kitchen that traces its origins to the interwar years. Young Mario grew up watching his parents run a dining room there before political tensions sent the family back to Italy. After the war, Mario Tiboni returned to Belgium, worked as a waiter along the coast, and finally secured this address to open his own place. He soon brought his wife Mimi into the daily operations, laying the groundwork for a local staple.
Following Mario’s passing in late 2013, their son Antonio assumed control of the kitchen and preserved the original vision. He prepares authentic Italian recipes using carefully sourced ingredients, ensuring the flavours remain consistent across decades. His sister Tatiana now joins him during service, adding another layer to the family operation. This steady hand keeps the establishment recognised by industry guides, including its placement on the Le Fooding list for 2026.
The kitchen centres on traditional Italian cooking, highlighting layered lasagna and slow-simmered soups that draw regulars seeking reliable comfort food. Patrons frequently pair these preparations with a glass of Prosecco or the house-made Aperitivo Maison from the compact bar area. The adjacent traiteur counter extends this approach, allowing guests to take carefully crafted meals home for quiet evenings. This straightforward service model complements the unpretentious, family-run environment.
