The story

Mico & Jon: Progressive Asian Cuisine in Antwerp

The kitchen behind the counter

Mico & Jon brings progressive Asian cuisine to a quiet corner of Antwerp, born from a decade of cooking by husband and wife team Jonathan Leung and Mico Cheung. After operating as a daytime bistro since 2016, they relocated to Kloosterstraat in 2019 to expand their service into evening dining. Jonathan’s training in architecture now informs his approach to balancing eastern techniques with western pantry staples. Their menu translates Hong Kong street food traditions into refined plates that prioritize seasonal sourcing and precise execution.

Plates shaped by tradition and texture

The kitchen builds its identity around cross-cultural pairings rather than strict regional boundaries. Beetroot dumplings filled with ground pork sit alongside scallion pancakes layered with melted cheddar and shiitake mushrooms. Seared scallops arrive dressed in gochujang, while a daily rotating pastry case showcases Mico’s matcha pudding cream puffs and light castella sponge. This careful approach to Asian cooking avoids rigid categorization in favor of balanced flavor profiles.

A cloistered space for unhurried meals

Dining occurs beneath a covered passageway where sober wooden chairs rest against exposed brick walls. Mismatched floor tiles and raw birch shelving create a restrained backdrop that keeps attention on the table. Mico manages the front of house with a steady presence that shapes the room’s comfortable rhythm. Le Fooding recognized this balance of unpretentious design and focused cooking when placing the Asian-inspired bistro on its 2026 list.

Two is always better than one! Mico + Jon form a magic duo inside this neo-bistro hiding down a covered passageway. On one side of the space, chef Jonathan Leung, an architecture student in a former life, mixes and matches eastern influences and western cuisines; on the other, his wife Mico Cheung prepares the sweets (don’t miss her matcha pudding cream puffs!) and handles front-of-house, where her presence fills the space with a soulful atmosphere – otherwise decorated with sober furniture, birch wood, mismatched tiling and bare bricks… On their “progressive Asian food” menu: mouthwatering beetroot dumplings stuffed with pork; shallot pancakes topped with melted cheddar and shiitake mushrooms; scallops from Zeeland cooked in gochujang (Korean chili paste); before a rather disappointing Blanc Bleu Belge beef tagliata, luckily made up for by the dessert course, a light and airy castella (Japanese egg cake). // Bobbi Rossi
