The story

Overzee in Antwerp: A Discreet Thai Kitchen on Dageraadplaats

The hands behind the counter

Overzee brings a focused Thai kitchen to Dageraadplaats in Antwerp. David Joris and Babs Cossers founded the project after their tenure at Overvloed. They appointed Phug and Mint to lead the cooking. Their method strips away excess and prioritizes direct, uncluttered flavors.

Plates built for sharing

The menu leans into bright Southeast Asian flavors without relying on heavy sauces. Betel leaves arrive wrapped around shallots, ginger, curry paste, and peanuts for a crisp plant-based bite. Juicy pork belly rests on bok choy and snow peas beside a sharp fish sauce. Dessert closes the service with a light Thai pancake and coconut ice cream.

A quiet room painted green

Visitors step into a discreet dining space where green tones cover the walls, windows, and furniture. The layout encourages conversation while keeping the focus squarely on the food. Le Fooding recognized this focused approach when they listed the restaurant for 2026. The team maintains that steady rhythm night after night.

Hiding away on Dageraadplaats is this discreet spot from David Joris and Babs Cossers (formerly of Overvloed fame), playing a Thai-style speakeasy game. The pitch? Green tones almost everywhere (from the walls to the windows, tables and chairs) and food that gets straight to the point, in the capable hands of Phug and Mint. Just take the other night as an example: betel leaves to garnish with shallots, dried shrimp, ginger, chili pepper, curry paste and peanuts, for plant-based wraps that go off with a bang; incredibly juicy pork belly served with bok choy and snow peas – dunked in some spicy fish sauce for an even hotter version; before a gooey but light Thai pancake paired with coconut ice cream, the last in the line of flawless dishes. // Suzette Follet
