The story

Au Stekerlapatte: Authentic Belgian Brasserie in Brussels' Marolles

Roots and Rhythm

Au Stekerlapatte anchors the Marolles district as a Brussels brasserie where Belgian tradition takes center stage without modern interference. Luc Wittevrouw and Lan Chen guide the kitchen through a menu built on recipes that have defined the neighborhood since the establishment opened its doors in 1974. Patrons gather around two historic bar counters beneath spotted mirrors and brass light fixtures, seated on wooden banquettes that have absorbed decades of conversation. The space feels less like a renovation and more like a preservation of the era when artists made this corner their daily haunt.

Uncompromising Classics

The kitchen commits to authentiek Belgian cooking with dishes like bone marrow and ballekes that draw crowds for their unpretentious richness. A crispy duo of shrimp paired with Orval croquettes offers a savory start, while the hanger steak arrives glazed in a full-bodied jus alongside fluffy fries. Carbonnade op zijn Vlaams melts on the tongue, proving that slow-cooked Flemish beef still commands respect in this kitchen. Dessert rounds out the meal with a Calvados tarte tatin that brings warmth to the classic finish.

Sweet Endings and Timeless Service

The dining room maintains a rhythm that balances the bustle of lawyers at lunch with the relaxed pace of evening gatherings. Staff serve generous portions of scallops with chicory and meatballs in tomato sauce, ensuring every table finds a favorite among the brasserie staples. A drink list featuring Belgian beers and spirits complements the robust flavors, while the Calvados tarte tatin provides a sweet conclusion to the experience. Guests consistently return for the combination of hearty cooking and a welcoming environment that has remained unchanged for decades.

Bone marrow and ballekes, what could be better? At Stekerlapatte, it simply can’t be beat! A lunchtime spot for lawyers, the perfect place to revisit the classics or to take friends who are visiting from out of town at night, this legendary brasserie located a stone’s throw from the Palais de Justice continues to lay down the law. Run by Luc Wittevrouw and Lan Chen, you won’t find any modern twists on the authentiek Belgian-Brussels cuisine, savored in a timeless space with wooden banquettes, spotted mirrors and brass light fixtures. The day we went, we opted for a crispy duo of shrimp and Orval croquettes, followed by hanger steak with shallots, which was delicious in its simplicity, served in a full-bodied jus with crispy and fluffy fries like grandma used to make, along with a carbonnade op zijn Vlaams (Flemish style) that melted on the tongue… Before a good Calvados tarte tatin, so we were sure to end the meal on a high note. //
