The story
Le Variétés occupies the ground floor of the “paquebot Flagey” – the ship-shaped art deco building designed by Belgian architect Joseph Diongre in the 1930s. This historic setting, near the bustling Place Flagey in Ixelles, sets the stage for a restaurant that feels both timeless and lived-in. The kitchen is open daily for lunch and dinner, with non-stop service on weekends.
The interior has been preserved with care. Zebrano wood panels line the walls, and the L-shaped dining room opens onto the bar and the kitchen. It is a warm, unpretentious space where the energy of the cooking passes directly to the tables. The vintage atmosphere is authentic rather than staged – a faithful reflection of the building’s past.
The menu is built around the great classics of Belgian cuisine, with house specialties that change with the seasons. At the centre of the offering is the rotisserie chicken, cooked on a broche – a signature that draws regulars. Whether you choose from the full carte, the reduced menu for groups, or the wine list, the cooking stays rooted in comforting, straightforward technique. The restaurant’s Michelin Bib Gourmand (2026) recognises this consistent quality and value.
Le Variétés is the kind of place where the food, the room, and the neighbourhood converge easily. It is a brasserie that earns its reputation not through novelty but through honest cooking and a setting that feels like Brussels itself.
