The story
Just outside Charleroi, in the quiet town of Nalinnes, LUMA brings a refreshing take on Modern French cuisine. The restaurant describes itself as “bistronomique” – a place where the conviviality of a bistro meets the precision of fine dining. The team’s philosophy is clear: refined terroir pleasures, authentic flavours, and elegant cooking without pretension. This approach has already earned LUMA a spot in the Michelin guide, a recognition that feels less like a formal accolade and more like a natural confirmation of the kitchen’s daily work.
The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and genuinely welcoming. The dining room invites you to settle in for an evening built around seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. The menu changes frequently, but recent offerings give a strong sense of the kitchen’s style. Starters might include an omble chevalier with morels and a mousseline of vin jaune, or a green asparagus tagliatelle with Stilton emulsion. Mains range from caramelised lamb with an oregano potato emulsion to a marbled cod with saffron, turmeric risotto, and hazelnuts. There is also a vegetarian option that changes with the season.
LUMA offers two tasting menus – four courses at €65 or six at €90 – which showcase the kitchen’s creativity and balance. The wine list evolves constantly, selected to complement each dish. Desserts are made in-house; a sablé tonka pistache with poached pear and pistachio ice cream, or a Gariguette strawberry dessert with hibiscus curd, are typical of the finish. A chariot of Belgian cheeses is also available.
The restaurant operates with a small, dedicated team, and the service is personal without being fussy. With private dining available and outdoor seating in warmer months, LUMA suits both special occasions and a simple, excellent weekday meal. It is the kind of place that earns its recommendation through consistency, clarity, and a genuine love for what it does.
