The story
In the Kai Art Centre at Noblessner, UMA brings a fresh, unorthodox take on Asian cuisine to Tallinn. The restaurant is the creation of Kristjan Peäske and Janno Lepik, known for Lore Bistroo and Lee Brasserie, who have built a space where Asian flavours are reinterpreted with boldness and personality. Leading the kitchen is chef Kristo Malm, whose passion for Asian cooking spans decades.
The menu at UMA is a playful, memorable exploration of Asian cuisine. Small plates include a crispy shrimp-sesame bun with chilli mayo, and whipped ricotta with honey and fermented chilli served with a coconut flatbread. For something more substantial, the satay chicken comes with a peanut sauce and apple-mint salad, while the panang curry with king prawns is bright with citrusy courgette. The steamed sea bass fillet is paired with wok-fried greens and a ginger–spring onion soy sauce. Vegetarians are well served by a crispy aubergine in sweet-sour coconut sauce and a pumpkin curry with roasted pumpkin, tofu and herbs. Desserts, like the yuzu-turmeric posset with icy blueberries in ginger syrup, keep the inventive spirit alive.
The wine list mirrors the kitchen’s approach – passionate, diverse and boundary-crossing. This confident, personal cooking earned UMA a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026, a recognition of good-quality, good-value food that fits naturally into the restaurant's ethos. It is a place where Asian cuisine is treated with appetite and creativity, never as a formula.
