The story

Enfin in Barr: Michelin-Starred Modern Cuisine in a Former Carpentry Workshop

In the heart of Barr, a former carpentry workshop has been transformed into a serene, contemporary space where wood and open counters set the stage for a kitchen that celebrates life. Enfin, which earned a Michelin star for its high-quality cooking, is a restaurant built on a simple principle: cooking that lives and breathes with the seasons.

Here, vegetables take the lead. The team sources directly from farmers across Alsace and beyond, selecting produce from responsible agriculture. Animal products appear sparingly, as a highlight rather than the foundation. Fermentations, brines, drying, and homemade vinegars extend the flavours beyond their natural cycles, giving the plates a distinct sense of place and time. This is Modern Cuisine that is both inventive and deeply rooted.

The menu changes with the seasons, following themes that reflect the rhythm of Alsace. In spring, the focus is on local potagers and early shoots; summer brings olive oil from Provence and memories of holidays; autumn calls for warm spices, broths, and comfort. Guests choose from several formulas, from a lunchtime “Flânerie” at 78 euros to the full “Saison” experience at 145 euros, each a multi-course journey through the terroir.

The dining room is calm and intimate, with air conditioning and an open kitchen that invites you to watch the brigade at work. In warmer months, a terrace serves aperitifs. The wine list mirrors the kitchen’s ethos—natural, authentic, often from small producers—and filtered water is offered free of charge throughout the meal.

Enfin is not about flashy trends. It is about honest, expressive cooking that respects the land and the people who work it. A place where the conversation between plate and glass feels natural, and where every dish tells a story of the season.

Jackpot for Carole Eckert, who traded her tiny Comptoir à Manger in Strasbourg (winner of the Fooding d’amour award in 2018) for this loft in Barr, a winemaker’s town near the Vosges mountains’ first foothills. Still as dedicated to locavorism as ever, the sommelier now spends her days in a former carpentry workshop that’s been given a modern makeover, bringing together felt grey walls and flooring, leather placemats and a long tiled bar behind which chef Lucas Engel (ex-Auberge Frankenbourg) is busy at work. That night, the four-course menu featured: tzatziki made with cucumber, watermelon, Wingen trout and squash, with freshly baked garlic herb pita bread for dipping; a surrealist catfish from the Rhine River prepared fish and chips style, topped with fried yellow squash and a silky tartar sauce; slow-braised caramelized pork belly, with a sticky blackberry and beetroot jus ; before a nod to bourgeois gastrology, an indulgent dessert cart that carried fromage blanc cake, crème brûlée, a giant creampuff filled with whipped cream and homemade sorbets. On nights and weekends, Lucas really knocks it out of the park with his eight-course menu where you’ll find fine cuts of meat or whole fish, like Arctic char or Salers steak. // Adrien Nouviaire
