The story
Long March Canteen, on Wrangelstraße in Berlin Kreuzberg, is a place where the ancient Chinese proverb “Trank und Speise und der Liebesgenuß” – drink, food, and love – sets the tone. The restaurant’s name references a historic journey, but its focus is on the here and now: lively, shared plates of Cantonese cuisine.
The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, praising “good quality, good value cooking” and describing it as “a cool, lively address” where dim sum and dumplings come from an open kitchen, perfect for sharing. The concept of dim sum – “small treats that touch the heart” – is taken seriously here.
The menu changes with the seasons. A winter menu, designed for two or more, opens with cold dim sum like konjac noodle salad with chili, garlic, and sesame oil, or thousand-year eggs with silken tofu. Warm offerings include the “world’s best pork ribs” in a soy-honey sauce, fresh scallops on silken tofu, and Argentinian beef filet cubes with black pepper sauce. Steamed shumai with pork, water chestnut, and shiitake are topped with caviar; pan-fried “Black Beef” dumplings bring Szechuan pepper. Dessert is a dark chocolate and ginger parfait with mango-passion fruit sauce.
A de luxe menu, for three or more, adds dishes like steamed marinated eggplant, crispy spring rolls with beef, and Peking-style duck breast with pancakes for DIY rolling. Dumplings include “Shanghai” soup dumplings and “Orange Prawn” pan-fried ones. The vegan “Real Thing” banana dessert is a sticky, crunchy, sugary treat.
Long March Canteen keeps its cooking authentic, without pandering to local tastes – a rare find in Berlin’s Asian restaurant scene. The wine list and cocktails are extensive, and the atmosphere is relaxed yet vibrant. Whether you come for a full menu or à la carte, the Cantonese flavors are direct and satisfying.
