The story

Nußbaumerin Berlin: Austrian Family Cooking Since 2008

Be hungry. Be thirsty. Be welcome.

This is the greeting from Johanna Nußbaumer, who has been welcoming guests to her restaurant on Leibnizstraße since 2008. Just off Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm, the thirteen tables offer an intimate setting for Austrian cooking that is both authentic and quietly refined. “Authentic… Traditional… Austrian!” is how the restaurant describes itself, and the kitchen delivers on that promise with courteous service.

Family Recipes, Modern Interpretations

The team cooks from traditional recipes passed down through the Nußbaumer family, while also introducing new interpretations of Austrian classics. The menu changes regularly, but mainstays include the Original Wiener Schnitzel with potato-cucumber salad, Tafelspitz with horseradish and roast potatoes, and the Vogerlsalat with sheep’s cheese and pumpkin seed oil. Hearty options like Wiener Rindersaftgulasch with bread dumpling sit alongside lighter ones such as Tafelspitzsülze in aspic. Desserts like Kaiserschmarrn with rum raisins and apricot dumplings are a fitting end.

Austrian Wines and a Bib Gourmand

The wine list is a careful selection of Austrian wines. “Small and fine,” the restaurant notes, “not a commonplace wine, but a rare speciality.” Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the Wachau to Vienna are well represented, and the staff is happy to guide guests through the vintages. The kitchen’s consistent quality has been recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand every year since 2013, a mark of good-value, well-executed cooking.

An Invitation to Slow Down

“Take time to eat,” Nußbaumer says, “and for the preparation as well.” The atmosphere is warm and unhurried, with private dining available in the Grünen Salon for those who need it. It’s a place that lives up to its own invitation: “Enjoy life!”
