The story

Chefs Atelier Essen – Michelin-Starred Seasonal Cuisine in an Intimate Open Kitchen

An Intimate Stage for Seasonal Cooking

In the quiet Souterrain of a house in Essen, Chefs Atelier offers a dining experience built on a simple idea: that genuine enjoyment comes from a new way of experiencing food. Here, design, interaction, and taste merge. The space is limited to just eighteen guests per evening, ensuring a personal and exclusive atmosphere. You begin with an aperitif in the lounge before taking your seat at a curved table directly in front of the open kitchen – the heart of the evening.

The Art of the Tasting Menu

Under the direction of Michelin-starred chef Alexander Hoppe, the kitchen team works with precision and creativity. Their style is described as a matter of the heart: inspired by Japanese finesse, carried by French technique, and driven by passion and care. The menu tells a story shaped by the seasons, playful textures, and the team’s collective inspiration. Each dish is a composition of depth and character, from a Hamachi with Gillardeau oyster and dashi to a main course of venison with red cabbage and celeriac.

A Perfectly Paired Evening

Sommelier Lara Westeppe curates a wine pairing for each course, creating a harmonious flavor journey. The service is warm and attentive, treating each guest as the heart of the evening. With only 18 seats available per night from Wednesday to Saturday, Chefs Atelier delivers an evening that feels less like a dinner and more like a private exploration of seasonal cuisine at its finest.

Concept An upscale fine dining offshoot of the neighboring "Chefs & Butchers". Classic six-course menu, including an aperitif. Culinary Style Alexander Hoppes' modern style is aromatic, clear, and straightforward. The lemon beurre blanc was excellent, beautifully contrasting with the subtle smoky and bitter notes of grilled head lettuce accompanying the chard-wrapped zander. N25 caviar added a touch of luxury. Delivering almost an umami effect, the quartet consisted of sot-l'y-laisse (a traditional French layered dish), an intense Vin Jaune sauce, peas prepared as a ragout and espuma, alongside sautéed morels refined with sherry. The kitchen team often serves the dishes themselves. Wine International wine list, carefully curated and perfectly paired with the dishes. Atmosphere Two lounge areas with comfortable, velvet-gray upholstered seating allow up to 18 guests to relax over an aperitif before being seated at one of the two impressive, curved tables. Open, fully visible kitchen. Conclusion A new culinary destination, stylish and elegant.
