The story

Löwen in Frickingen: Modern Cuisine with a Sardinian Soul, Bib Gourmand 2026

Tradition meets Sardinian warmth

In the quiet village of Altheim, north of Überlingen, the Löwen has been a fixture for over 400 years. Once a simple wine tavern, it has evolved into a destination for modern cuisine that respects its roots. The family runs it in the fourth generation: mother Isolde transformed the Gasthaus into a place for connoisseurs, and son Roman Pfaff, together with kitchen partner Sabrina Bourjaillat, carries that spirit forward.

The atmosphere is both welcoming and deliberate. Inside, a tiled stove and handcrafted woodwork by senior and carpenter Franz Pfaff create a timeless setting. Outside, the garden terrace offers a relaxed view of the greenery – a perfect spot for a quiet evening. The Michelin Bib Gourmand 2026 rightly highlights the restaurant’s commitment to quality and value, and the team’s warm hospitality makes every visit feel personal.

Modern cuisine shaped by the region

The kitchen’s philosophy is rooted in the Linzgau region, sourcing from outstanding local producers. The menu changes with the seasons, built on freshness and natural flavours. This is modern cuisine at its most honest: small, refined dishes that let the ingredients speak.

But the Löwen also knows how to travel. In March, it hosts a Sardinian week, bringing the flavours of the island to the Bodensee hinterland. Dishes like porceddu arrosto (spit-roasted suckling pig), fregola con vongole, and malloreddus with a Sardinian-style ragu show the kitchen’s versatility. The antipasti vegetariani – featuring grilled eggplant, pecorino, and chicory – are a highlight, and the seadas (fried ravioli with sheep’s cheese and eucalyptus honey) is a must-try dessert. Sardinian wines from the Argiolas estate accompany the meal, and a Mirto finishes it off.

Whether you come for the regular modern cuisine or the Sardinian specials, the Löwen delivers a genuine, unfussy dining experience that stays true to its place and its people.
