The story

Zur Tant: Michelin-Starred Classic Cuisine with Rhine Views in Cologne

Zur Tant: A Century of Hospitality on the Rhine

In the historic riverside district of Köln-Porz-Langel, a restaurant has been welcoming guests for over 175 years. Zur Tant, first documented in 1849, earned its affectionate name from the local villagers who would say, "We're going to the aunt's place" — a reference to the single woman who once ran the inn. Today, that same warmth and sense of home defines a Michelin-starred dining experience.

Since 2014, chef Thomas Lösche and service director Marlen Mager have led the "Team Lösche," continuing a legacy of fine dining that began when the Hütter family took over in 1976. The restaurant has long been recognized for its excellence, holding a Michelin star that was first awarded to Franz Hütter and now proudly maintained by Lösche.

The philosophy at Zur Tant is refreshingly direct: source the best possible ingredients, prepare them with heart, and let the harmony of food and drink speak for itself. The kitchen draws on French and Mediterranean influences to create a style described as "light, modern cuisine" — a refined take on classic cuisine that changes with the seasons. Vegetables, meat, and fish are bought in small quantities, ensuring peak freshness. Produce comes from the immediate region, while seafood is chosen from line-caught fish landed on nearby coasts.

The setting is as compelling as the food. The dining room is deliberately restrained in white and grey, allowing the true star of the view — the Rhine — to take center stage from every table. It is a calm, elegant space that has been a destination for connoisseurs between Cologne and Bonn for half a century.

Whether you choose the Gourmet Restaurant or the more casual Piccolo Rheinterrasse, the approach is the same: only the best for body and soul.

Concept Traditional hospitality meets refined modernity: seasonal, often regional ingredients, skillfully prepared. Menu of 4 to 6 courses, each available also à la carte. Kitchen Style Thomas Lösche cooks with clarity, focus, and sensuality: The Oberberg salmon trout in tomato broth with fermented vegetables stands out for its fresh acidity, while the sea bass with langoustine raviolo impresses through subtle marine notes. The Eifel veal with its sweetbread showcases precise craftsmanship, whereas the plum dumpling with plum butter ice cream provides a nostalgic finale. Generous portions served with ample sauce on the side. Wine Around 100 predominantly German and Austrian wines, partly from lesser-known winemakers. Harmonious pairings. Atmosphere Simple interior, terrace with a view of the Rhine. Mario Fitz leads the attentive service with plenty of Austrian charm and wit. Conclusion A reliable staple of culinary classics: The half-timbered house by the Rhine is well worth the trip to the very southern tip of the city.
