The story
In the heart of Marktbreit, at Michels Stern, the fourth generation of the Michel family continues a tradition that began in 1920. Brothers Stefan and Wolfgang Michel run the Gasthaus with a clear philosophy: you are cooked for by the chef and served by the chef. The result is a warm, unpretentious dining room where the focus is squarely on the plate.
The kitchen, led by Küchenmeister Wolfgang Michel, specializes in country cooking that is both hearty and refined. The menu moves confidently from a Franconian Leberklößchensuppe to a delicate Pilzmousse, and from a classic Wiener Schnitzel vom Kalb to a roasted Iberico pork cutlet with creamed savoy cabbage. Seasonal ingredients drive the menu, with dishes like a crispy-skinned Skrei (winter cod) fillet with pea purée appearing when the time is right. This commitment to quality and value has earned Michels Stern a consistent Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide since 2012—a recognition of the excellent price-performance ratio found here.
The history of the house adds depth to every meal. Originally a farmhouse built in 1785, the building became the Gasthaus "Zum Goldenen Stern" before being renamed Michels Stern by the current generation. Guests can also stay overnight in the adjoining guesthouse, making it a true destination for those exploring the region.
With a wine list of over 300 labels from top Franconian vintners, Michels Stern offers a complete experience of Franconian hospitality—rooted in tradition, executed with skill, and served without fuss.
