The story
In the heart of Aosta, Vecchio Ristoro occupies a 17th-century mill, its stone walls and historic character providing an understated backdrop for a kitchen that draws deeply from the Valle d’Aosta. Owners Filippo Oggioni and Paolo Bariani have steered the restaurant since 2019, making it a landmark for fine dining in the city.
The cooking here is contemporary Italian and French in spirit, but grounded in the Alpine larder. Filippo Oggioni, now executive chef, describes his approach as “artisanal, frank and focused on flavor,” with Italianness and freshness as guiding principles. Since spring 2026, the daily kitchen has been led by resident chef Tommaso Lupo, a young chef who trained alongside Oggioni. Together they continue a philosophy of rigorously à la minute preparations, respect for fresh ingredients, and the modernization of historic Italian and French recipes.
The team sources weekly from Aosta’s farmers’ markets, working with local dairy, honey, sustainable farms, and trout from Morgex. Game and poultry feature prominently, with a special autumn menu dedicated to the Valle d’Aosta hunting season. The result is a cuisine that feels both precise and of its place.
Guests choose from two tasting menus: Pensiero e Gesto in seven or five courses, joined by a five-course vegetarian option. Up to four diners may also order à la carte from the same repertoire. Three wine pairings are available, and the wine list itself is extensive—curated, as the restaurant puts it, to ensure the best both on the plate and in the glass. A notable offering is the “Plenitude” experience pairing a four-step tasting menu with a bottle of Dom Pérignon Vintage 2015.
Vecchio Ristoro has held a Michelin star since 2021, recognition of its consistent high-quality cooking. The restaurant’s own words capture the ambition well: “In the magnificent setting of a 17th-century mill, we showcase the Valley and its treasures.” Lunch and dinner service runs Tuesday through Saturday, with online reservations required.
