The story
Since 1965, the Arrigoni family has run Hostaria Da Cesare on via Crescenzio, a short walk from the Vatican. Owner Armando Arrigoni has a clear philosophy: bring restaurant dining back to concrete values. His kitchen uses only extra virgin olive oil for cooking and top-tier peanut oil for frying. The Parmigiano Reggiano comes from a single artisan known to Italy’s best chefs. Even the pizza is topped with real mozzarella, not processed cheese blends.
This commitment to sourcing defines the place. Arrigoni works directly with small producers, fishermen and farmers, often on exclusive terms. The menu reflects that care, offering classic Italian cuisine that lets ingredients speak. Standouts from the menu include handmade tortellini with Chianina ragù, rigatoni with Chianina stew and pecorino, and spaghetti with vongole veraci. For meat lovers, there are saltimbocca alla romana, a Milanese-style veal cutlet, and peposo served with roasted polenta. Pizza is available at dinner. The wine list is separate and worth exploring.
The dining room is comfortable, with outdoor seating for warmer months. Service is direct and attentive. The approach has earned Da Cesare a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its consistency and quality. For those tired of over-engineered plates, Da Cesare offers something rarer: honest cooking at a fair price.
