The story
On Taipa’s bustling Rua do Cunha, Fong Kei has been a fixture since 1902. Founded by Gao Chong as a tea house before evolving into a pastry shop, the bakery has spent over 118 years making traditional Chinese pastries by hand. No preservatives, no shortcuts — just the same careful methods passed down through three generations.
The signature lineup includes gai zai beng (chicken biscuits), lo po beng (wife cakes), almond biscuits, and meat-cut crisps. Over time, golden peach pastries, egg biscuits, and walnut cakes have also become customer favourites. Everything is made on-site, and the quality has made Fong Kei a must-stop for visitors seeking authentic Macao souvenirs.
Fong Kei’s commitment has earned it a place in the Michelin Guide from 2016 to 2020, with inspectors noting the “well-made almond biscuits and egg rolls.” In 2010, third-generation owner Gao Pei Ji received the Medal of Tourist Merit from the Macao government. The bakery was also named a “Macao Characteristic Old Shop” in 2019 — an honour that recognises businesses preserving local heritage. It’s a rare continuity in a fast-changing city, and one that keeps people coming back.
