The story
Just minutes from Amsterdam’s bustle, De Voetangel sits in the open polder landscape of the Ronde Hoep, a place where the city’s skyline meets reed-fringed waterways. The building has been a landmark since around 1626, first as a herberg (inn), then a café with a tea room. Since the early 20th century, the Leurs family has been its custodian, and today the fourth generation—Henk Leurs and his partner Sabine—runs the restaurant, continuing a tradition of warm hospitality.
The restaurant’s philosophy is straightforward: “Wij zijn dol op ons vak,” they say—we love our craft. They select their own wines, source the finest ingredients from the surrounding region, and create every dish from scratch, guided by their own experiences. The result is a menu that changes with the seasons, offering lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Highlights include a monthly menu that showcases the best of the moment, and a carefully curated wine list featuring bottles from France, Italy, Spain, and beyond. Their signature dish, the “Polderjongen,” is a meat dish that pairs beautifully with a full-bodied Argentine Malbec.
The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. You can start with an aperitif at the bar, dine in the restaurant with a view of the open kitchen, enjoy a leisurely lunch in the brasserie, or celebrate a private event in the polderkamer. In fine weather, the sunny terrace offers a front-row seat to the polder’s quiet beauty. The team’s passion is evident in every detail—from the “glimlach” (smile) on their faces to the thoughtful recommendations they offer.
De Voetangel’s commitment to quality and genuine hospitality has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026. It’s a place where you can truly escape the city’s rhythm—sip a glass of wine while the polder landscape, the water, and the rustling reeds do their work.
