The story
In the heart of Groningen
At Oosterstraat 39, Vive La Vie occupies a nostalgic building with a modern, unpretentious interior. The open kitchen is the literal and figurative heart of the house – chefs regularly step out to present their dishes themselves, turning dinner into a personal exchange.
A kitchen without a menu
Chef-owner Jeroen Sportel and his team work with surprise menus of four to seven courses. There is no à la carte; instead, the kitchen builds each menu around the freshest seasonal products, ensuring both quality and sustainability. The style is rooted in modern French technique, enriched with influences from Cambodia, Thailand and Laos – a reflection of Sportel’s own culinary curiosity. A recent exchange in Croatia, through the JRE network, brought back ideas like smoked mussels with sea fennel. The wine pairing, curated by sommelier Lara Sportel, completes the experience.
Recognition that speaks for itself
Vive La Vie holds a Michelin Recommended distinction, a quiet nod to its steady craft. In 2023 Sportel was voted Chef of the Year by his JRE colleagues – a peer recognition that carries weight in the close‑knit world of young restaurateurs. The restaurant has also welcomed a new kitchen chef, Tim Ringers, signalling an ongoing evolution.
The experience
Dinner at Vive La Vie is refined yet relaxed. The all‑in arrangement covers amuses, bread, a glass of wine with each course, still or sparkling water, and coffee with friandises. For the lighter appetite, four‑ and five‑course options are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The vibe is welcoming, the music low, the conversation easy – a genuine bistronomie where ambition doesn’t come at the cost of comfort.
