The story
In the Limburg hill country, just outside Heerlen, Restaurant De Leuf occupies a historic carréboerderij (courtyard farm) that has become synonymous with warm, personal hospitality and cooking that refuses to stand still. The restaurant describes itself as “familie traditie in beweging” — a family tradition in motion — and that phrase captures the spirit of what makes this address so compelling.
Chef Robin van de Bunt and his right hand, Thijs Gerards, have steered the kitchen through a remarkable transformation. After travelling through Asia together, they brought back a wealth of influences that now define De Leuf’s signature style: “local meets Asian.” The menu is a dialogue between French technique and Asian flavours, where a dish of Tonijn (tuna) meets wasabi, sakura, and shizo, and Kabeljauw (cod) is paired with miso, vin jaune, and wagyu. A signature course, ‘Like father, like son’, pays tribute to Robin’s late father and the restaurant’s founder, Paul van de Bunt.
The awards speak to the quality of the experience. De Leuf holds a Michelin star for high-quality cooking, and in 2025, Sandra and Michelle van de Bunt — mother and daughter — were awarded the Michelin Service Award for their “high-end bediening” and natural charm. Robin himself was named Gault&Millau’s “Jonge topchef van het Jaar” (Young Top Chef of the Year) in 2022, and the restaurant scores a consistent 17/20 from that guide. The Best Chef Awards also recognised Robin with a One Knife (Excellent) rating in 2025.
The dining room, recently redesigned with local materials and an Asian aesthetic, offers a private dining space called the Yukari room — the Japanese word for connection — which seats groups from 4 to 14. Whether you choose the multi-course Lente Arrangement or order à la carte, the kitchen’s precise, flavour-forward cooking is matched by a service team that makes every guest feel genuinely welcomed. As Michelin’s inspectors noted, De Leuf feels “als thuiskomen” — like coming home.
