The story

Ni Hao Nunspeet – Modern Cantonese Cuisine with Michelin Recognition

A Modern Take on Cantonese Gastronomy

Since 1990, Ni Hao has been a culinary destination on the Veluwe, translating the richness of Chinese cuisine into a refined, contemporary dining experience. The philosophy here is rooted in craftsmanship, precision, and a deep commitment to pure flavors. At the stove is chef Jie Chen, who combines traditional Cantonese techniques with a modern approach. Each dish is built with attention to detail, balance, and elegance—a signature that defines the kitchen’s story.

In the dining room, Shuping Chen-Wu leads service with quiet class and personal warmth. As curator of the wine and tea pairings, she carefully selects accompaniments that elevate each course. Together, they aim for an experience that feels both sophisticated and welcoming—a meeting of tradition, innovation, and timeless Chinese hospitality. This approach has earned Ni Hao a place among Michelin’s Recommended restaurants, a recognition that speaks to the consistency and quality of their work.

What to Expect on the Plate

The menu reads like a journey through Cantonese classics and modern interpretations. Start with delicate bites: raw oysters with tomato-coriander salsa or steamed with Tausie and bisque foam, or perhaps the Japanese Wagyu spring rolls. The Chistro section encourages sharing—a nod to the Chinese tradition where dishes arrive as they are ready, without a fixed order. Here you’ll find dim sum like xiao long bao, siu mai, and ha kau, alongside crispy tongue fish parcels with mango-ginger chutney.

For larger plates, the kitchen shines with dishes such as Black Tiger prawns in Cantonese style, roasted duck with ananas and citrus, and the classic Koe Lu Yuk—described as “the only real one.” The Imperial Duck Menu is a standout: a multi-course ode to duck, from crispy skin pancakes to teppan-fried filet flambéed with cognac. For those who want a broader taste, the tasting menu “Le Voyage de Marco Polo” offers three to six courses, inspired by the seasons and built with fresh ingredients and authentic flavors. A supplement of Kagoshima Wagyu ribeye A5 is available for those seeking an extra indulgence.

The Setting

Ni Hao occupies a standalone building on the Harderwijkerweg, with its own parking lot and a terrace seating twenty. Inside, a private dining room accommodates groups from fifteen guests, making it suitable for celebrations or business dinners. The atmosphere strikes a balance between refined and relaxed—elegant without being stiff, warm without being casual. It’s a place where the focus remains squarely on the food and the hospitality that surrounds it.
