The story
In 2010, chef Jos Grootscholten and Sharon Tettero opened the doors of restaurant Perceel in the old town hall of Capelle aan den IJssel, just outside Rotterdam. The restaurant sits on the dike along the Hollandsche IJssel, a location that has been fully renovated while retaining its authentic character. The terrace, rebuilt in 2016, offers outdoor dining directly by the river.
The name Perceel refers to a plot of land—a reference to the chef’s own herb and edible flower garden beside the restaurant. Each day, the kitchen brigade picks the freshest ingredients from this garden, a practice that shapes the menu’s seasonal focus. The team, described as young and driven, works with knowledge, passion, and craftsmanship, always striving for perfection.
The restaurant’s warm, homely atmosphere was preserved during a 2018 redesign by Rotterdam-based designer Jeroen Smeele. Soft velvet, subtle colour nuances, and floral touches give the space a nostalgic feel. A standout feature is the Chefstable, a generous spot for up to five guests, offering a front-row view of the kitchen.
The kitchen draws inspiration from the seasons, and the menu is flexible for guests with dietary needs. The team’s experience includes stages at Noma in Copenhagen and at three-Michelin-starred Martin Berasategui in San Sebastián, as well as work in top Dutch restaurants such as Beluga, Vermeer, and Calla’s. Just sixteen months after opening, Perceel was awarded a Michelin star, a recognition it continues to hold. Gault & Millau named Jos Grootscholten “Belofte van het Jaar” (Promise of the Year), and the restaurant was named Capelse Entrepreneur of the Year.
Perceel also serves as an official wedding venue and hosts private dining for groups up to 40 seated guests or 50 for a walking lunch or dinner. For larger events, the restaurant offers catering on location. The menu can be tailored to individual preferences, with matching wines and specialty beers selected accordingly.
