The story

Muggels by Gijs – Modern Cuisine with International Flair in Uden

A Thatched Farmhouse with Ambition

Muggels by Gijs occupies a characterful thatched farmhouse on the Boekelsedijk, just outside Uden’s centre. The setting is deliberately calm – a landelijke charme that makes you feel far from the bustle while remaining easy to reach, with ample parking. Inside, the old farmhouse’s authentic details meet contemporary comfort, creating a warm, inviting space that feels like home but just a bit more special.

Chef Gijs Hoevenaars and His Kitchen

Chef Gijs Hoevenaars leads the team, drawing inspiration from French, Asian, and Mediterranean kitchens. The result is refined, seasonal cooking that balances craftsmanship with creativity. Every dish, from the first amuse to the dessert, is prepared with attention and passion. The menu changes with the seasons, always with a creative twist. This modern cuisine approach has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026 – recognition of the kitchen’s consistent quality and original voice.

Tasting Menus and Seasonal Offerings

For guests who want the full experience, the All-in Tasting is available exclusively on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday. It features a four-course menu with a sourdough bread roll, two amuses, paired wines (or soft drinks/beer), and coffee with friandises. Priced at €85 per person, it’s a complete evening of flavours. The restaurant also hosts special events like Lazy Sunday and Sunday Lounge, so it’s worth checking the agenda when booking.

Dining in the Garden

As soon as the sun appears, the doors open to the garden. Here you can enjoy a relaxed lunch or a festive dinner surrounded by greenery. The outdoor space brings together good food and conviviality in a natural setting, perfect for warm-weather dining.

A Place for Every Occasion

Muggels by Gijs welcomes guests for lunch, dinner, or a drink – whether it’s an intimate dinner for two, a gathering with friends, or a celebration. The team also caters to private events such as receptions, family dinners, and business parties. Above all, the focus is on gastvrijheid (hospitality) and creating memorable moments. At Muggels, each meal is served with care, in an atmosphere that balances character, modern comfort, and genuine warmth.

After a long career at De Lindehof in Nuenen, Gijs Hoevenaars took a new step in the autumn of 2024, joining forces with seasoned restaurateur Theo van Lith. His concept Muggels Wine & Dine has become Muggels by Gijs. The venue is a beautiful thatched-roof farmhouse just outside the center of Uden. The decor is charmingly rustic, the atmosphere warm and relaxed, and the cuisine modern French with vibrant Asian accents. Alongside surprise tasting menus ranging from three to six courses, there is also an extensive à la carte selection. After several tasty amuse-bouches and bites from the menu, we start our meal with perfectly pan-seared sea bass accompanied by cucumber, radish, and watermelon, to which a ginger vinaigrette adds a delightful kick. Experienced sommelier Iete Braeken pairs it with a superb Verdejo from Rueda by José Pariente. The second wine, ‘Tesela by Clunia’ crafted from the local Albillo grape in the Spanish province of Burgos, is another spot-on choice alongside the baked red mullet with squid spaghetti and tom kha kai sauce. Our main course features a generous portion of slow-cooked and briefly grilled veal tenderloin, braised veal cheek, a selection of legumes, pommes dauphine with ras el hanout and Madeira sauce. The wine choice here, a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo by Del Priore, proves to be a perfect match once again. We happily make room for dessert: a large white chocolate cherry filled with cherries, elderflower and lime mousse, and a sorbet of yogurt, elderflower, and marinated cherries. A tribute to Uden as the former cherry village and a fitting end to what can only be described as a hearty dinner. Welcome to Lekker.
