The story
Restaurant Kasteel occupies a 13th-century tower house along Utrecht’s Oudegracht, serving refined European cuisine that balances medieval architecture with a streamlined kitchen. Peter Elzendoorn and Ireen Ophof launched the doors in 2003, and a recent transition to the PK Bar & Kitchen team has preserved the vaulted cellar brewery while updating the dining rooms. Flat iron steak rests beside pommes fondant and truffle jus, establishing a methodical approach to continental cooking.
The European kitchen adjusts its lineup around local harvests, though summer mussels cooked entirely in house white beer remain a constant fixture. Diners frequently order ceviche of seabass tossed with cucumber and mango, or pan-seared sea bream accompanied by creamy polenta and saffron sauce. These preparations pair naturally with craft beers drawn from copper tanks in the adjacent vaults, rounding out a straightforward dining experience.
Dining areas combine dark wooden beams with bright yellow decorative elements, a deliberate palette that secured a two-spoon rating from the Schlemmer Atlas. The guide specifically noted how the cozy atmosphere supports à la carte service featuring French partridge breast and seared scallops. Sunlight washes over polished tables during afternoon hours, ensuring the focus stays firmly on the craftsmanship behind every plate.
