The story
Max and Ruben established Bij de Jongens in Valkenburg as a dedicated comfort food destination when they opened their doors in 2018. They wanted to build a space that functions as a proper living room for locals and visitors alike. The kitchen treats every visit as a collaborative effort where guests simply state their preferences and the team prepares the meal accordingly.
The menu revolves around elevated comfort food that prioritizes hearty ingredients over theatrical presentation. A standout opening course features diced watermelon paired with freshwater crayfish and a dense yuzu foam. Hearty mains like glazed spare ribs anchor the service alongside seasonal vegetable preparations and heavy pours of regional craft beer.
Gault&Millau awarded the venue thirteen points for its welcoming living room atmosphere and consistently attractive dishes. The physical space deliberately blurs the lines between a restaurant, a café, and a brasserie while maintaining a heated outdoor terrace for year-round seating. Staff members encourage both scheduled reservations and spontaneous walk-ins to keep the daily energy steady.
