The story
In the pretty village of Porches, just off the EN125 near Carvoeiro, O Leão de Porches occupies an authentic 17th-century farmhouse. Originally discovered and lovingly converted by an English couple in 1970, the building retains many original features. Since 2005, owner Bianca Salden and her team have dedicated themselves to making this one of the most appealing places to dine in the Algarve.
The setting is a key part of the experience. A superb patio dining area offers warm summer evenings, while the interior preserves the charm of the historic structure. The restaurant is well known for its wonderful sauces, fine ingredients, and the beautiful presentation of its dishes. Guests describe the menu as exciting and inviting, with a tasting menu that is "unparalleled." The recognition from the Michelin guide as a Recommended restaurant underscores the consistent quality found here.
The kitchen focuses on international cuisine, with an emphasis on sauces and presentation. Diners frequently praise the attention to detail visible in every aspect of the meal. A past wine dinner menu, for example, showcased a progression from a tomato consommé with scallop ravioli to lamb with bean and mint purée, demonstrating the kitchen's range and precision.
Regulars note that the menu is always varied and interesting, with new starters appearing alongside beloved classics like the Dame Blanche dessert. The wine advice is excellent, and the service makes guests feel looked after. Whether you choose the patio or the indoor dining room, the ambiance is lovely.
O Leão de Porches has earned a reputation as one of the Algarve's best-kept secrets. Open for dinner from 18:30 to 22:00 and closed on Wednesdays, reservations are recommended to avoid disappointment. Once you have experienced O Leão de Porches, you will understand why so many guests return again and again, eager to share this secret with friends.
