The story
On the banks of the Ljubljanica, in the old town’s Dvorni trg, Peti 181 occupies a corner that already feels special. Step onto the terrace and the city opens up: the castle above, the river’s bustle below. The restaurant calls it a “heavenly” vantage point, and the first plate only deepens that sense of occasion.
The kitchen draws from Mediterranean and seafood traditions, with a clarity of flavour that comes from first-rate ingredients. The chef, who trained in France, brings a classical hand to the menu. Start with the luxuriant beef tartare, strewn with fried capers – a textural play that works. The foie gras, a nod to that French training, is accented by apple flambéed with cognac. Then there is the shrimp soup, where a crunchy tempura shrimp tail swims in a deeply savoury broth – a dish the restaurant urges you not to miss. Meat eaters and those with a sweet tooth are also well looked after.
“At Peti 181, one is reminded of the true beauty of life,” the restaurant says. That is not marketing; it is the cumulative effect of precise cooking, a serene room, and a view that makes you slow down. The Michelin guide has recognised the restaurant with its Recommended distinction, and it is easy to see why: the elegance is genuine, the flavours leave a strong and lasting impression. Open Monday to Friday from 18:00 to 23:00, it is an evening destination that earns its place in Ljubljana’s dining scene.
