The story
Shambala takes its name from a mythical Tibetan kingdom of peace and enlightenment. The restaurant’s own story begins with a playful twist: “Many have searched for Shambala in the mountains of Tibet, but only those who found it on Križevniška Street in Ljubljana truly know where it is.” Since 2009, this address has been a destination for Asian cuisine that is both authentic and personal.
The kitchen describes itself as “masters of connecting flavours.” Some dishes are traditionally Asian, others lean into what might be called fusion—though the team dislikes that word. What sets Shambala apart is the time given to preparation: fresh herb blends, sauces, and marinades are made from scratch daily. The result is a red Thai curry that has earned a reputation as the best in the city, with layers of coconut sweetness and fresh coriander that linger even after the heat subsides.
The restaurant also takes particular pleasure in pairing Asian dishes with Slovenian wines. Rather than explaining the logic on paper, they invite guests to discover the harmony themselves at the table.
Shambala has been listed in the Michelin Guide every year since 2020, and also holds awards from Gault&Millau and Falstaff. One travel guide described the kitchen as turning out “some of the best (and spiciest) Asian cuisine in Slovenia,” while noting the tranquil, almost meditative ambience that allows diners to enjoy their meal in a state of perfect relaxation.
The menu offers degustation journeys of five, six, or seven courses. A welcome from the kitchen often begins with a fresh Vietnamese spring roll. Then come dishes such as Black Tiger prawns grilled in fresh herbs and chili with mango sauce, a Japanese miso soup with tofu and wakame, or the fiery Tom Yum soup with prawns and mushrooms. For mains, Black Angus beef marinated in lemongrass appears alongside ginger-marinated salmon with lime, bell pepper, and smoked sweet potato purée. Additional courses in the longer menus include a Balinese chicken salad with lemongrass and long beans, and a ceviche of sole in coconut milk with coriander oil.
For those ordering à la carte, the red Thai curry remains a signature—a spicy dish built from a house-made herb paste. The grilled sea bass fillet with ginger and pak choi is another favourite, and the chocolate soufflé with mango ice cream and coconut foam provides a memorable finish.
The dining room is calm and centred, with an almost meditative quality. Outdoor seating is available in warmer months, letting guests enjoy the heart of Ljubljana’s old town. Whether you come for a full degustation or a single bowl of curry, Shambala delivers Asian cuisine that is both honest and refined.
