The story
Since opening in 1989 on Calle Espronceda, Restaurante Gala has been a steady presence in Madrid’s castizo Barrio de Chamberí. The restaurant describes itself as small, and its longevity reflects a consistent philosophy: market cooking that respects ingredients and lets their quality speak. That approach has earned Gala the Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction for eight consecutive years (2018–2025), placing it among a select group of well-priced, quality-driven restaurants in the Comunidad de Madrid. It has also been recommended by Guía Repsol for multiple years.
Under chef Pablo Lozano, Gala’s kitchen works with the daily availability of produce. The menu is “true market cuisine,” wrote the restaurant, changing with each season to reflect what is freshest. While certain classics remain available year-round, the bulk of the offer shifts. This approach means the cooking is straightforward yet refined – a philosophy of letting the product shine through careful, respectful preparation.
A la carte options are complemented by a seasonal tasting menu that the team describes as a “walk” through the dishes that most define Gala’s essence. The menu changes four times a year. For wine, the restaurant’s cellar holds over 100 references – reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines – selected by wine lovers with an eye for versatility and surprise. A special pairing with Criacuervos wines is also available.
Gala presents itself as a space where high cooking meets art, with impeccable presentations and a sophisticated setting. The dining room is suited for celebrations or for anyone seeking a refined meal in the heart of Madrid. It is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday.
