The story
Sjömagasinet sits at Göteborg’s harbour entrance, housed in a building that began life in 1775 as a warehouse for the Swedish East India Company. Over the centuries, it has served as a customs house and a pilot station, but its reputation today rests firmly on the exceptional seafood served within its walls. The restaurant is a proud part of the Klippan Cultural Reserve, a setting that blends maritime history with a welcoming, lively atmosphere.
The kitchen at Sjömagasinet has been shaped by some of Sweden’s most celebrated chefs. Leif Mannerström first put the restaurant on the map with his genuine focus on fish and shellfish, delivered with warmth and humour. Later, Ulf Wagner and head chef Gustav Trägårdh elevated the experience, adding a world-class wine cellar with a particular passion for Chablis and Champagne. Since 2021, and now under the sole ownership of Mats Sjölander since July 2025, the restaurant continues to write new chapters. Sjölander, alongside Jennie Selin, brings a vision of a modern gastronomic total experience, centred on the finest ingredients from the sea and carefully selected drinks.
The à la carte and lunch menus change regularly, showcasing the best of the West Coast. Dishes such as wine-poached lemon sole stuffed with scallop, or cured sautéed cod with root mash and brown butter, demonstrate a kitchen that respects tradition while embracing precision. For those wanting a broader taste, the West Coast Bouillabaisse and the classic Swedish smörrebröd are firm favourites. The wine list is a destination in itself, recognised on the Star Wine List, with a deep selection of Champagnes including rare vintages from Bollinger and Charles Heidsieck. This commitment to quality has earned Sjömagasinet a Michelin recommendation, a fitting recognition for a restaurant that has been a cornerstone of Göteborg dining for decades.
