The story
On the private island of Cape Fahn, just off the coast of Ko Samui, Long Dtai delivers something rare: Southern Thai cooking that respects the source. The name means “heading south,” and that is exactly where this kitchen goes—deep into the region’s bold, aromatic traditions.
Long Dtai is the work of Michelin-starred chef David Thompson, a world authority on Thai cuisine. Partnering with Cape and Kantary Hotels, he opened this seafood-focused restaurant at the luxury Cape Fahn Hotel. The menu draws from local markets and insists on line-caught fish, supporting marine sustainability without compromising on flavour.
The dishes are vivid and direct. Spicy yellow curry with tiger prawns, local fish and laksa leaves. Fragrant turmeric soup with prawns. Grilled squid gorlae, a stir-fry of silken eggplants with yellow beans, basil and king fish, and a grilled skate curry with wild mangosteen leaves. Sides like papaya omelette and Mae Dtae’s peppercorn relish with fresh vegetables round out the experience.
The kitchen also turns out a spicy stir-fry of local scallop with wild ginger, green pepper and holy basil, and an aromatic beef skewer with cumin and turmeric. Desserts stick to tradition: steamed coconut palm sugar pudding. The menu, while seasonally driven, consistently showcases the punch of southern Thai cooking.
Long Dtai earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026, a recognition that aligns with its uncompromising standards. CNN has noted that “authenticity is guaranteed,” while Thailand Tatler praises it for using the “rich culinary traditions of southern Thailand.” The restaurant’s commitment to real Southern Thai seafood—bright with chilli, turmeric, and coconut—sets it apart on an island often served generic fare.
The restaurant sits within Cape Fahn Hotel, overlooking the gulf. Indoor and outdoor seating allow for a meal that matches the relaxed, refined atmosphere. The bar opens from 5 p.m., dinner from 6 p.m., closed Wednesdays. Whether you come for the views or for Thompson’s cooking, Long Dtai delivers a taste of the south that feels both grounded and exact.
