The story
At Luminosa, a wood-burning oven is the heart of the kitchen. It adds a “touch of fire” to handmade pizzas, house-made pastas, and locally sourced vegetables. The restaurant describes itself as an Italian eatery with a hyperlocal lens, and that means butchering whole cows in-house, visiting local farmers’ markets nearly every day, and running a zero-waste kitchen. Pasta is made by hand daily.
Executive Chef Graham House and Chef de Cuisine Sean McMullen lead the kitchen. The menu changes with the seasons, drawing from regional purveyors. Antipasti might include apple brandy beef carpaccio with smoked trout tonnato, or bone marrow tater tots. Pizzas range from a classic Margherita to a peach and Italian sausage version. Primi feature rigatoni with San Marzano tomato and calabrian chili, or ramp cappalachia with brown butter and cured egg yolk. Secondi include a 32-ounce bone-in ribeye, roasted half chicken, and wood-fired lion’s mane mushrooms. The beverage program highlights local Asheville brews, including an exclusive collaboration, alongside cocktails and a diverse wine list.
Located inside The Flat Iron Hotel, a historic adaptive reuse building, the space is warm and wood-centric, evoking a cozy tavern. The restaurant also features a rooftop Caffé, a speakeasy, and private dining for up to 150 guests.
Recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking, Luminosa brings Italian tradition into conversation with Appalachian ingredients and craftsmanship.
