The story
Kimball House takes its name from the original Kimball House Hotel, a historic Atlanta landmark that once covered a full city block downtown. The restaurant’s own words describe its food as “Old American Cuisine” — a homage to classic hotel fare, seen in dishes like caviar service and the Kimball House steak dinner. Yet the kitchen and bar embrace modern tools such as sous vide and liquid nitrogen, marrying tradition with innovation.
“We serve food and drinks that reflect the seasons, farms, and personalities of the people preparing them,” the team notes. Humility, hospitality, and passion are the foundation. The result is contemporary American cooking that feels both grounded and refined. The bar follows the same philosophy: classic, elegant cocktails presented with new flavors and techniques. This approach has earned Kimball House a Michelin Recommended distinction, a testament to its consistent quality and welcoming spirit.
The main dining room and patio are open Tuesday through Sunday, with a few tables reserved for walk-ins. For gatherings, Bonanza! at Kimball House offers a private 600-square-foot dining room with its own entrance, patio, and restroom, seating 10 to 24 guests. Menus are fully customizable, and additional services like floral arrangements and AV equipment are available. The restaurant also caters oysters on site, bringing shuckers and knives for events.
At 303 East Howard Avenue in Decatur, Kimball House has been a fixture since 2013. A Southern Living feature from 2014 captured it well: “Everything about Kimball House works. Through the design, the service, and the food, it manages to balance preservation and progress.” That balance remains at the heart of this American contemporary restaurant today.
