The story

Kemuri Tatsu-ya Austin | Michelin Bib Gourmand BBQ Izakaya on East 2nd

K E M U R I

Kemuri Tatsu-ya is the kind of place that makes you question why no one thought of this sooner. On East 2nd Street in Austin, the team behind the Tatsu-ya ramen empire built a smokehouse that thinks it's an izakaya—or maybe it's the other way around. Either way, the result is a restaurant that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking, and it's easy to see why.

The menu reads like a conversation between two cuisines that have more in common than you'd expect. You'll find a Brisket Dipping Ramen, where condensed pork bone broth meets yuzu zest and smoked jalapeño, alongside Wagyu Shortrib Skewers that spend 48 hours in a sous-vide bath before hitting the grill with a smoked tare chimichurri. The BBQ section delivers on its promise: pork ribs glazed with carrot and ginger, brisket rubbed in aka miso, and Butabara Burnt Ends made from Berkshire pork belly glazed in Kagoshima sweet tea tare.

This is not a fusion gimmick. The izakaya DNA runs deep, from the Negima skewers with bulb scallions and sansho to the Tori Hatsu (chicken hearts) dressed in Suntory Toki tare. The classics section leans into the mashup with a Chili Cheese Takoyaki—creamy octopus fritters topped with Texas chili and bonito flake—and a Hot Pocketz that wraps BBQ brisket and smoked gouda in tofu skin. The cocktail list follows the same logic, with drinks like the Kai Kura Kura 3.0, which blends Balcones rye with miso orgeat, and a notable sake list that includes a house collaboration with Daimon.

The space itself is casual and unpretentious, with counter dining, outdoor seating, and a bar that stays busy. It's the kind of restaurant where you can order a round of skewers and a BBQ Boat for the table, then finish with a fresh take on banana pudding. Kemuri Tatsu-ya has carved out a corner of Austin that feels like it belongs to no one else—and that's exactly the point.
