The story
At La Condesa, the cooking is rooted in the traditions of interior Mexico, yet the spirit is distinctly Austin. Executive Chef Rick Lopez leads a kitchen that honors authentic Mexican cuisine through a farm-to-table lens, relying on seasonal produce from local farmers and, most importantly, masa that is made entirely in-house. As Chef Lopez puts it, “Without corn, there is no culture,” and his dedication to bringing the full masa lifecycle into the restaurant is a defining feature of the menu.
The result is modern Mexican food that feels both soulful and refined. Dishes like the Esquites—grilled corn with cotija mayo and aleppo—or the Tostada Vegana with cauliflower and salsa macha showcase bright, layered flavors. The bar program is equally serious, boasting one of the city’s largest collections of 100% blue agave tequila and mezcal, making it a destination in its own right.
This commitment to quality has earned La Condesa a Michelin Recommended distinction since 2024, as well as a James Beard nomination for Outstanding Restaurant. It’s a recognition that aligns with the restaurant’s long-standing reputation—word of mouth has been recommending it since it opened in 2009.
Whether you come for weekend brunch, weekday happy hour at the bar, or a full dinner, the atmosphere is welcoming and unfussy. It’s upscale Mexican food in downtown Austin, served without pretense.
