The story
Vik's Chaat began in 1989 as a small counter inside Viks Retail Store, a spice and grocery warehouse in Berkeley’s commercial district. The business grew through word of mouth, and by 2004 the team expanded to handle the lines of customers arriving from across the Bay Area. In 2009 the restaurant moved two blocks south into a larger, brighter space – still a warehouse in feel, but room enough for the steady stream of regulars and first-timers who come each day.
Today Vik's Chaat is a family-run operation, with Amod Chopra and his family at the helm. Born in Mumbai, Amod spent much of his childhood across India before moving to California in the 1980s. Many of the dishes here draw from those early memories and from return trips to India. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its commitment to authentic, fresh Indian food.
The word “chaat” literally means “to lick.” In India, these roadside snacks were traditionally served on a leaf – so tongue-tingling that customers would lick the leaf clean before tossing it. Vik's Chaat brings that spirit to Berkeley, offering regional chaat dishes from different parts of India. Every item is made to order. Produce is chopped daily, dough is kneaded each morning, and each samosa is hand-shaped. The kitchen refuses to cut corners, and it shows in the bright, layered flavours of every plate.
Vik's Chaat isn’t just a dining spot. It shares space with Viks Market, a grocery that sells Indian spices, pantry staples, and prepared goods. The restaurant itself serves lunch and dinner daily, with both indoor and outdoor patio seating. Daily thali specials – featuring vegetable curries, chicken, lamb, and fish – rotate frequently and are announced on social media. The menu also includes classics like bhaji, puris, and papdis, all built on fresh ingredients and traditional technique.
With over 2000 dishes served each day, Vik's Chaat has become a destination for anyone craving honest, handmade Indian street food. The Michelin Recommended badge only confirms what Berkeley has known for decades: this is a place worth the trip.
