The story
Lenox Sophia, on the corner of A Street and West Third Street in South Boston, is a casual dining restaurant serving modern American fare—a place where chef-owner Shi Mei’s vision of “delicious, affordable food that guests will want to return to week after week” comes to life. The restaurant’s straightforward, welcoming approach earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026, a nod to the quality and consistency of its contemporary cuisine.
Shi Mei’s path to Lenox Sophia is a story of reinvention. After earning an economics degree and spending six years in accounting, he traded spreadsheets for chef’s knives, attending culinary school at Johnson & Wales. He then worked in Napa Valley at Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry and Bouchon, later becoming chef de cuisine at Jason Dady’s Bin 555 in San Antonio and eventually Director of Operations. Returning to Boston in fall 2016, Mei spent time in kitchens across the city before opening his own restaurant. The result is a place that feels both intentional and unpretentious.
Lenox Sophia offers a five-course prix-fixe dinner, a format that allows the kitchen to showcase contemporary American cooking without the stuffiness of a tasting-menu-only institution. The restaurant is intimate, with limited seating and a 90-minute reservation window, so the pace is efficient but unhurried. The space is air-conditioned, with outdoor seating available, and a private room can be arranged. Wheelchair access is provided via a portable ramp and an ADA doorbell.
A notable feature is the BYOB policy: guests may bring their own wine or beer (no spirits, no large containers). This keeps the experience both flexible and personal. The restaurant does not accommodate all dietary restrictions—no vegan, strict vegetarian, or shellfish allergy guarantees, and celiac and allium allergies cannot be accommodated. There is no kids’ menu, but well-behaved children are welcome.
Lenox Sophia is open Wednesday through Saturday for dinner, from 5 to 10 pm. It’s a place that rewards repeat visits, where the contemporary cuisine is grounded in solid technique and a genuine desire to please.
