The story
At 236 Washington Street in Brookline, Mahaniyom has quickly become a beloved destination for authentic Thai cuisine. The name itself, which means “very popular” and “beloved” in Thai, speaks to the restaurant’s mission: to create a welcoming, feel-like-home atmosphere that captures the true spirit of Thailand.
The team behind Mahaniyom is driven by a deep passion for Thai food. Led by industry veterans—including alumni from Shojo and other Thai restaurants across Boston and the West Coast—they focus on meticulously home-cooked style dishes made entirely from scratch. Every plate is crafted with care, aiming to deliver what they call “the taste of home.”
The menu is inspired by Ran Lao (ร้านเหล้า), the lively bars in Thailand where people gather over small plates and drinks. These shareable Thai tapas are designed to pair perfectly with Mahaniyom’s handcrafted cocktails, making every meal an occasion for connection. As the restaurant puts it, “Food is what we believe is the best way to connect people together, tell stories, and share emotions.”
In 2025, Mahaniyom earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a distinction that recognizes good quality, good value cooking. That same year, it also received the Northeast Cities Exceptional Cocktails Award, making it the only restaurant in Boston to receive both honors simultaneously. This recognition is a testament to the team’s passion, dedication, and vision.
In 2024, building on Mahaniyom’s success, the team expanded by opening Merai, a cocktail-forward sibling spot in the same Brookline neighborhood. Together, they continue a mission to bring people together through flavors, warmth, and creativity—one plate of authentic Thai food at a time.
