The story
Since opening in 2017, Mooncusser has been a steady presence on Stuart Street, dedicated to New England fish and seafood. In April 2021, Chef Carl Dooley took the reins, bringing a distinct style that marries local catch with vibrant, international influences. The result is a contemporary menu that feels both rooted and adventurous—a philosophy that earned the restaurant its Michelin Recommended distinction.
Mooncusser operates on a seasonal prix fixe format. At $125 for the tasting menu (with a $65 wine pairing), each course is built around what’s best from the sea and the region. The menu changes with the seasons, but recent offerings give a clear sense of the kitchen’s ambition: a Smoked Lamb Spring Roll with gunpowder spice and lime yogurt; Marinated Sea Bass with pineapple and caramelized habanero oil; Roasted Local Scallops with artichoke barigoule and jamon iberico; and a Grilled Bluefin Tuna with snap peas, ginger, and fresh horseradish. Even the meat course—Grilled Berkshire Pork with morel mushrooms and ramp salsa verde—echoes the kitchen’s attentiveness to place and time.
The desserts are equally thoughtful: a Manjari Chocolate Flan with crispy masa and hoja santa, or a Lime Semifreddo with rhubarb jam and graham cracker crumb. The wine pairings are curated to complement the layered, often spicy profiles.
The dining room is understated, letting the food speak. The service is polished but warm, and the kitchen’s precision is evident in every plate. Mooncusser also houses Moon Bar, a separate space for cocktails and a more casual menu, making it a versatile destination for both a full tasting experience and a lighter evening out.
This is contemporary cooking at its most confident—a Boston restaurant that knows exactly what it is and executes it with clarity.
