The story
In Chattanooga’s St. Elmo neighborhood, Little Coyote is Chef Erik Niel’s love letter to smoked meats and fresh tortillas. Inspired by his Texas roots and fired by a wood pit that never quits, this spot serves low-and-slow BBQ with serious Southwestern soul.
The menu centers on meats smoked over hardwood—think beef brisket, pork shoulder, and smaller cuts like smoked pork collar “carnitas” and smoked beef chuck eye. House-made corn tortillas, rolled and pressed with masa harina from Mexico, are the foundation. The restaurant is entirely gluten-free by nature (aside from a few beers), with no wheat flour in the kitchen. Sides like black beans and rice, and a selection of moles and condiments, round out the family-style plates.
The bar is built around agave spirits, with over 100 varieties of tequila, sotol, raicilla, and mezcal. Classic cocktails with a twist, a curated list of Mexican and Spanish wines, and a robust zero-proof menu complement the Southwestern flavors.
Little Coyote earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its good quality, good value cooking—a recognition that speaks to the care behind every dish. It’s straightforward, flavorful BBQ that takes its time, and it’s right at home in Chattanooga.
