The story
Kumiko calls itself a Japanese Dining Bar (dainingu bā), a concept that sets it apart from both traditional bars and conventional restaurants. In Chicago’s West Loop, chef, creative director, and beverage visionary Julia Momosé leads a kitchen and bar where food and drink are treated with equal reverence, each crafted with deep intentionality and care. The space, intimate and elegant, reflects her belief that Japanese cuisine is both artful and everyday, reserved and expressive.
Momosé’s menu spans the soulful breadth of Japanese cooking — from delicate, refined dishes to the comforting and fried. Guests can order à la carte or choose the seasonal tasting menu, which comes with four thoughtful pairing options: light cocktails, stirred cocktails, spiritfree drinks, and Japanese sake. The sake list is particularly notable, featuring selections like a snow-aged junmai daiginjo and a sparkling junmai from Hiroshima, each described with the same clarity as the food.
This approach — elevating every component of the meal — earned Kumiko a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. It is a recognition that aligns with Momosé’s mission: to expand the understanding of Japanese cuisine beyond sushi and ramen, showing its range through ingredient-driven cooking and meticulous beverage craft.
Kumiko is located at 630 W. Lake Street, its entrance marked by a blue door. The dining room is open to guests 18 and older. Reservations are required for the tasting menu and strongly recommended for à la carte. Whether stopping in for cocktails or settling in for a full dinner, the welcome is warm and genuine.
