The story
Union, on North California Avenue in Logan Square, describes itself as a community-centric love letter to the pride and joy of the Midwest: beer and food. Since opening, it has become a fixture of the neighborhood’s bar and dining scene, welcoming everyone from commuters grabbing a quick drink to diners settling in for a long evening.
The restaurant’s New American cuisine is built around seasonally focused, shareable plates that reflect sustainable Midwest cooking. The menu pairs naturally with a thoughtfully curated beverage program that celebrates the region’s brewing heritage.
Union has earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction every year since 2023—including 2024 and 2025—a recognition that highlights good quality, good value cooking. This consistent nod from Michelin speaks to the restaurant’s reliable, well-executed food and welcoming atmosphere.
The beer list is a rotating showcase of 24 draught taps, featuring everything from funky sours to dark lagers and classic pilsners, sourced from breweries across Chicago and the Midwest. The spirits list boasts over 200 bottles of whiskey, complemented by classic brown-liquor-based cocktails and a concise wine selection of biodynamic, organic, and domestically sourced wines. The drink program changes daily, so there’s always something new to try.
The interior feels both intimate and lively, with sixteen bar seats, high-backed booths, and three large communal tables that invite conversation. Union is part of Meadowlark Hospitality, founded in 2021 by owner Steve Lewis, a Logan Square resident and hospitality veteran. His vision was to create a uniquely Chicago concept that pays homage to one of the world’s best cities for beer—and he succeeded.
