The story
In Pocahontas, just outside Clinton, Mississippi, Sacred Ground Barbecue is redefining what BBQ can be. Opened in 2024, this is the latest venture from Chef Derek Emerson, a Mississippi culinary veteran whose career has spanned fine dining and Southern hospitality. Here, he turns his focus to the craft of Central Texas-style barbecue—a style defined by patience, fire management, and the simple purity of salt, pepper, smoke, and time.
The restaurant’s story is deeply rooted in place. Chef Emerson and his wife Jennifer discovered an old 1890s brick building along Highway 49 North, a spot that felt right despite being tucked between a Dollar General and a deer processing shop. The land itself carries family history—Jennifer’s Sylvester family has long ties to the area—and across the road sit ancient Native American mounds over two thousand years old, whose pottery inspired the restaurant’s branding. A piece of local BBQ lore also lives on: the original sign from Big D’s Barbecue, a beloved roadside stop whose slogan was “Barbecue so good it stops the train,” now hangs inside Sacred Ground.
The result is a restaurant that feels both personal and welcoming. The warm, rustic interior invites guests to settle in, while the spacious outdoor patio and arcade games—including shuffleboard and ping pong—make it a place where families and friends gather. It’s a spot built for lingering over a beer and slow-smoked meats.
Sacred Ground’s commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed. The restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand award, a designation that celebrates good quality, good value cooking. It’s a nod to the kind of barbecue that draws travelers from across Mississippi and the South.
Chef Emerson’s approach is a departure from the sweet, sauce-heavy BBQ of his youth. Instead, he focuses on the essentials: wood, smoke, and time. Locally sourced ingredients and inventive twists round out the menu, offering classic American BBQ with a thoughtful edge. The family—including daughter Alex Ferguson, who joined as a partner—has created a place where multiple generations can share a meal and a moment.
Sacred Ground Barbecue is open Thursday through Sunday, 11 AM until they sell out. It’s a destination built on history, family, and a relentless pursuit of barbecue craft.
