The story
Motor Supply Company Bistro occupies a place that feels both historic and alive. Housed in a renovated engine supply building from the late 1800s—now listed on the National Register of Historic Places—it was one of the first restaurants to open in Columbia’s Congaree Vista in 1989. The original neon sign still hangs on the exposed brick outside, a quiet marker of how long this kitchen has been feeding the city.
The restaurant earned a spot in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide and is recommended for 2026, a recognition that aligns with its steady, unhurried commitment to quality. Owner Eddie Wales started as a server here before working his way up to general manager and eventually taking ownership in 2000. General Manager Ariel Brady, who joined in 2011, shares his focus on sustainability and farm-to-table sourcing.
The menu changes for lunch, dinner, and brunch, so there’s always a reason to return. Motor Supply uses sustainably farmed, house-butchered meats, produce from local farms, and South Carolina seafood. Every dressing, sauce, and dessert is made in-house. The dinner menu draws on New World techniques with European, Asian, and West African influences, while the brunch leans into Southern staples like shrimp and grits and house-made pimento cheese. Lunch offers farm-fresh salads, sandwiches, and hot entrees—perfect for a business meal or a catch-up with an old friend.
The wine list has earned a Wine Spectator award nine times, with more than 200 selections. There’s also a single-barrel bourbon, hand-selected with Wild Turkey’s Master Distiller Eddie Russell, available only at Motor Supply.
The atmosphere balances fine-dining service with a relaxed, contemporary feel. Diners can choose the outdoor patio or the cozy dining room. Reservations are recommended, and complimentary valet parking is offered.
Food Network called a catfish dish “the perfect oh-so-Southern bed,” Garden & Gun noted the “eclectic mix of contemporary dishes,” and Eater Carolinas mentioned the bourbon cocktails. Motor Supply has been a local favorite for over three decades—and the Michelin nod confirms what regulars already knew.
