The story
Petals of a Peony was born from a love of all things Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The founder spent three years in Chengdu and fell in love with the city and its food. She brought back everything she loved — the flavors, the feelings, the family-style restaurants — so that Memphians could get a taste of Sichuan, too. The original Cordova location opened in 2023 in an unsuspecting strip center.
Chef Liu leads the kitchen, and the Michelin Guide describes Petals of a Peony as “ground zero for fiery, tongue-numbing, chili-laden Sichuan cuisine.” The menu is built around generous portions meant for sharing. Standout dishes include Mapo Tofu, Stir-fried Cumin Lamb, Crispy Chicken with Dried Chilis, and Charred Green Beans. The Michelin inspectors specifically named these as favorites.
The restaurant is casual and welcoming, designed to feel like a family-style Chinese restaurant you’d find in Chengdu. One customer wrote, “One bite and I felt like I was back in China. Chef Liu and his team have outdone themselves!” Another raved, “Legitimately the best Chinese food I’ve ever eaten in my life.” The goal is simple: make the experience as authentic as possible, so customers feel like they’re eating in the finest Sichuan restaurant in China without stepping on a plane.
Petals of a Peony earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2025, a testament to the kitchen’s commitment to bold, unapologetic Sichuan cooking. If you love heat and savor spice, this is the place to be.
