The story

Barcelona Wine Bar Dallas – Spanish Tapas & Award-Winning Wine List in Texas

A Wine Bar Born From Memory

Barcelona Wine Bar began in 1995 with a simple idea: recreate the feel of an evening in Barcelona. Founders Sasa Mahr-Batuz, drawing on years living in Spain and Portugal, and Andy Pforzheimer, a chef with two decades in celebrated kitchens from France to New York, opened a tiny 38-seat wine bar. They made no compromises. The space evoked Milan or SoHo. The food was simple, flavor-filled, redolent with olive oil, lemon, and smoky paprika. And the wine list reached around the world, with an emphasis on the lesser-known regions of Spain and Portugal. That original vision still guides every bottle poured and every plate served in Dallas.

Spanish Tapas, Mediterranean Soul

The menu at Barcelona Wine Bar is clean and rustic, with tapas shaped by Mediterranean, Spanish, and South American influences. Dishes are built around bold, honest flavors—no fuss, just ingredients that speak for themselves. Whether you come for a quick glass and a bite or a long evening of sharing plates, the food stays true to the founders’ ethos: guided not by trends, but by what tastes right.

A Wine List Worthy of Attention

Nearly 400 wines fill the list, earning Barcelona Wine Bar a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2022. The program leans heavily on Spain and Portugal, but also roams into biodynamic and small-production gems from across the globe. The restaurant’s own wine team—led by award-winning beverage professionals—offers regular wine classes that go deep into Spain’s iconic regions: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Bierzo, and Priorat. These sessions are substantive, designed for anyone who wants to understand why wines taste the way they do, from terroir to technique. Biodynamic winemaking gets special attention here; the team celebrates holistic farmers who work with lunar cycles, local mules, and deep respect for the land.

More Than a Bar

Barcelona Wine Bar also hosts private events, runs a marketplace for gift cards and merchandise, and fosters a culture that values education and community. In Dallas, it’s a place where Spanish cuisine meets serious wine—and where a 1995 dream still pours freely.
