The story
Since 2006, Nonna has been a fixture in Highland Park, conceived as a place where locals can gather for authentic, regional Italian food. The menu changes daily, shaped by the season and by what local producers can supply. The kitchen’s approach is direct: pristine ingredients, rustic preparations, and a wood-burning oven that anchors both the dining room and the cooking.
The cuisine is Italian, with a Texas accent. Handmade pastas, pizzas, seafood, and locally sourced vegetables and meats all come from the same wood-fired hearth. Dishes like Tajarin al Ragu di Emilia Romagna, Farfalle Marrone with black truffle butter, and a Gulf Coast Red Snapper from the wood oven are typical of the kitchen’s range. The wine list and cocktail program round out the experience.
In December 2023, Nonna expanded into the adjacent Bacari Tabu Lounge, a space that channels the original Tabu’s low-lit, intimate atmosphere with live jazz and music on Fridays and Saturdays. The full Nonna menu is served there, and the lounge stays open later, offering a different mood while keeping the same food.
Nonna’s consistent quality earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026, a designation for good quality, good value cooking. It’s a fitting nod to a restaurant that has spent nearly two decades refining its ethos: seasonal, local, and unpretentious.
