The story
Alteño is the newest creation from Chef/Owner Johnny Curiel, whose work has earned Michelin recognition. The restaurant pays homage to his Jaliscan Highland roots—specifically the region of Los Altos de Jalisco. The name itself references Curiel’s father, the original “Alteño,” whose spirit runs through the restaurant’s soul. Here, heritage flavors and rustic preparations take center stage, spotlighting a cuisine that is both deeply personal and distinctly contemporary.
The design and atmosphere draw from the campestre (countryside) influence of Curiel’s childhood in the mountainous Los Altos region—rolling hills, colonial architecture, and wild, untamed land. That sense of rugged beauty is translated into a warm, grounded dining room, where the focus remains on the food and the stories behind it.
The menu weaves together traditional Mexican ingredients with modern techniques, reflecting the chef’s dual identity. The beverage program, developed by Johnny and his wife Kasie, balances top-shelf native Mexican flavors with agave spirits like raicilla and mezcal. Classic cocktails and a thoughtfully curated wine list—overseen by an in-house sommelier—include selections from Mexico, Europe, and the United States. It’s a pairing that complements the kitchen’s rustic yet refined approach.
Alteño’s commitment to quality and authenticity has earned it a place in the Michelin guide, recognized as Recommended. For those seeking contemporary Mexican cuisine in Denver, this is a destination where tradition meets modern elegance—without pretense.
